WhatsApp’s new Mountain View office marked its debut as Meta (then Facebook) acquired the esteemed messaging app. The new headquarters was designed to reflect WhatsApp brand and ethos.
WhatsApp’s need for privacy and efficient design, the bedrock of the app, indicated the space plan's main functions. The largest gathering spaces, a gym and café, were focused on the ground floor, while the remaining upper stories, with a view of tree canopies, were reserved for general office space. This layout allows minimal distractions and keeps bustling activity focused on the ground floor.
The interior design was inspired by the WhatsApp founder and culture, with cold-rolled steel accents, reclaimed wood, polished concrete, and an occasional vibrant pattern. The interiors simple palette allowed bold graphics to stand out in unexpected places such as a stairwell, which were commissioned by local artists. Overall, the interiors were designed to be minimal with a contemporary nod, reflecting the brand’s identity as pared down and efficient.
